Short description
The deep conversation between a Japanese architect and a French actress forms the basis of this celebrated French film, considered one of the vanguard productions of the French New Wave. Set in Hiroshima after the end of World War II, the couple -- lovers turned friends -- recount, over many hours, previous romances and life experiences. The two intertwine their stories about the past with pondering the devastation wrought by the atomic bomb dropped on the city.

What's left behind the scenes

  • At the time of filming, Japanese actor Eiji Okada did not know French, and therefore was forced to memorize his lines by ear.
  • It was assumed that Françoise Sagan would write the screenplay for the film, but Marguerite Duras took on the work after the writer refused.
  • Alain Resnais insisted that his film was supposedly built on a clear algorithm: “I presented Marguerite with the algebraic concept of the work. If you were to represent ‘Hiroshima’ with a diagram, you would discover a quartet form close to a musical score: themes, variations on the initial theme, repetitions, returns that may seem unbearable to those who do not accept the rules of the game in this film. The diagram would show that the film is constructed as a triangle, in the shape of a funnel.”
