What's left behind the scenes

  • Director Ridley Scott said that he sold the sets for the film "Kingdom of Heaven" to the Moroccan government for $10, as it was cheaper than the cost of dismantling them. After the deal was completed, he rented the same sets several more times to film the city at the beginning of the film.
  • Barry Keoghan was cast as the emperor, but he left the film due to commitments to other projects.
  • Almost all of the actors in the film speak with British accents, and only Denzel Washington retained his New York pronunciation.
  • There have been repeated attempts to write a sequel script. Once, Russell Crowe and Ridley Scott even asked Nick Cave to do so. His script focused on the mystical aspects of life in ancient Rome. It told of how Maximus goes to the afterlife and meets the souls of the dead. After some time, Jupiter and other gods of the Roman pantheon ordered him to return to the world of the living to find and kill Hephaestus, who had betrayed them. Maximus was resurrected and went to Rome to prevent the spread of Christianity, but during this mission he crossed paths with the new emperor Lucius. The film would have ended with a curse on Maximus, condemning him to eternal life. It would have included scenes of Maximus fighting in the Crusades, World War II, and the Vietnam War, and would have ended with scenes of Maximus in modern times, working at the Pentagon.
  • Darya Sersek and Michael Ireland of Paramount were convinced to give Paul Mescal the lead role in this film by his performance in the play "A Streetcar Named Desire".
  • Black actor Denzel Washington plays Marcus Opellius Macrinus, whom some contemporaries called a Moor due to his origin – he was born in the territory of modern Algeria. Although no exact description of his skin color has been found, Macrinus most likely had a light or bronze complexion typical of Mediterranean peoples.
  • Baboons in the battle scene with gladiators were portrayed by 12 short stunt performers (some of whom were teenagers), who were replaced with animals using computer technology.
  • In the first film of the franchise, rhinoceroses were initially planned to be shown in the arena instead of tigers, but this had to be changed due to the impossibility of taming real animals, and the computer graphics of those years could not convincingly portray rhinoceroses. A rhinoceros does appear in this film.
