Short description
The seemingly invincible Spider-Man goes up against an all-new crop of villains—including the shape-shifting Sandman. While Spider-Man’s superpowers are altered by an alien organism, his alter ego, Peter Parker, deals with nemesis Eddie Brock and also gets caught up in a love triangle.

What's left behind the scenes

  • During the filming of the scene where Spider-Man's fist passes through Sandman, a unique stunt double took Tobey Maguire's place – Baxter Hamby, the only one-armed boxing world champion in the world. He delivered punches with his arm amputated below the elbow, and the fist emerging from the other side of Sandman was later added with computer graphics.
  • The premiere date for the third film was announced before the release of the second movie.
  • John Dykstra, who received an 'Oscar' for creating the special effects for 'Spider-Man 2' (2004), chose to leave the franchise and work on 'Hot Wheels' (2007). Scott Stockdick took his place.
  • Topher Grace did not renew his contract for filming in the 'That '70s Show' television series, preferring to star in this film.
  • Sam Raimi did everything possible to conceal Venom's appearance in the third film. During pre-production, he even stated that he had never liked the character and did not intend to include him in the film.
  • According to Topher Grace and Thomas Hayden Church, when they went to a meeting at Sony, they didn't even realize they would be auditioning for roles in the film.
  • The role of the fiery blonde Gwen Stacy was played by redhead Bryce Dallas Howard, while the role of the redhead Mary Jane Watson was played by natural blonde Kirsten Dunst.
  • The film became one of the most expensive in the history of modern cinema – the film's budget was $258 million. Previously, the most expensive films were considered to be “King Kong” ($207 million) and “Pirates of the Caribbean 2: Dead Man's Chest” ($225 million).
  • Composer Danny Elfman, who had worked on the soundtrack to previous films in the franchise, was forced to leave the project due to creative differences with the film's director Sam Raimi. He was replaced by Christopher Young. Interestingly, after leaving the project, Danny began working on the musical accompaniment to another “spider” film – “Charlotte's Web” (2006).
  • It took Thomas Hayden Church approximately 16 months of work to get his physical condition into the appropriate state for the role of Sandman.
  • The appearance of the Sandman character in the third film was authorized by a personal request from Tobey Maguire.
  • According to one of the film's producers, Grant Curtis, the Vulture was one of the villains in the early drafts of the script for the third installment. He was later replaced by Venom.
  • While wearing the Venom suit, Topher Grace did not drink any liquids during breaks in filming.
  • Special effects specialist Scott Stockdick created miniature versions of skyscrapers at a scale of 1 to 16 to save time and costs, but also to allow the models to look realistic.
  • Only in the Russian distribution was a subtitle, “Enemy in the Reflection,” added to the title.
  • Creating the scene where an out-of-control crane destroys a skyscraper required assembling a photo-panorama of the cityscape, footage shot on set at full scale (where the disaster set pieces were created and operated by a special effects team led by John Frazier), miniature footage produced by New Deal Studios, and finally, digital effects developed by CafeFX.
  • Sam Raimi’s brother, Ted, played the role of J. Jonah Jameson’s assistant.
  • Composer Christopher Young appears in the scene with Mary Jane’s rehearsal – he portrays the pianist.
  • Real sand was used in the scenes featuring Sandman. The only exception was for shots where Sandman, dissolving, buries his opponents. Crushed cornflakes were used instead of sand.
  • The entire film was shot using reflections in mirrors.
