- The film was shot over three years.
- The first film to be nominated for an Academy Award in the categories of Best Documentary Feature and Best International Feature Film.
- The film crew did not understand the specific Turkish dialect spoken by the main characters. It was only during editing, when a translation was made, that they realized the value and importance of some of the lines.
- After her mother's death, the main character, Hatice, left her village. Now she lives in a village closer to the city, in a good house with electricity and water. She still returns to take care of the bees.
- The first film to be nominated for an Academy Award in both the Best Documentary Feature and Best Foreign Language Film categories.
