Short description
A divorced writer from the Midwest returns to her hometown to reconnect with an old flame, who's now married with a family.

What's left behind the scenes

  • Scenes of the film taking place in the Midwest were shot near Churchill apartments in downtown Minneapolis.
  • In the film, Mavis (Charlize Theron) drives a Mini Cooper, just as Stella Bridger (also Charlize) does in the climactic heist in "The Italian Job" (2003).
  • Although the film is set in Minnesota, the scenes at and around Woody's bar were filmed in Massapequa Park on Long Island, New York.
  • During the scene where Mavis (Charlize Theron) is choosing clothes in a store, a salesperson offers to help her, and Mavis asks if they have anything by Marc Jacobs. Theron is actually a big fan of the New York designer's clothing.
  • The drink Mavis chooses is Maker's Mark. In the film "Juno" (2007), also from Jason Reitman and Diablo Cody, when Vanessa offers drinks, Juno asks for Maker's Mark.
  • One of Matt's dolls is Nite Owl, one of the members of The Minutemen, a team of vigilant heroes from the film "Watchmen" (2009). Patrick Wilson played Nite Owl II in this film.
  • Buddy Slade asks Mavis Gary for one of the "Waverly Prep" books. However, he gets the title wrong, saying "Waverly Place," likely a slip of the tongue by the actor due to the similarity to the name of the Disney Channel children's series – "Wizards of Waverly Place" (2007-2012).
  • The wine stains on Mavis's dress change their location at least three times during her 'big speech' at the baby naming party.
  • After Mavis paints her nails dark blue, she sits in KFC while Buddy calls her. Her nails are blue throughout the conversation, but a moment before she hangs up, they appear unpainted. In the next scene, they are blue again.
  • The highway signs (I-35, I-535, and US Hwy 53) near the Hampton Inn where Mavis checks in indicate a location called Mercury, Minnesota in the Duluth area, but the nearby mall features a Chuck E. Cheese's, Raymour & Flanigan Furniture, and Liquid Ice. The nearest Chuck E. Cheese's is several hours away in the Minneapolis area. Raymour & Flanigan Furniture is only found in the northeastern United States (Pennsylvania, New York, New England), and the sign visible at the hotel after the interstate signs (New York State Route 35) only emphasizes this inconsistency.
  • Mavis orders Maker's Mark whiskey and then drinks 2/3 of it, at which point the glass is refilled. Mavis then pours more whiskey and drinks it to the bottom, after which she picks up a glass already filled to the brim from the table.
