• Meg Ryan was the first choice for the role of Suzanne Stone, but she turned down the offer. Patricia Arquette, Jodie Foster, Bridget Fonda, Holly Hunter, Mary-Louise Parker, and Jennifer Jason Leigh were also considered for the role.
• After completing work on the film, Casey Affleck presented director Gus Van Sant with a screenplay written by his brother Ben Affleck and his friend Matt Damon. Van Sant filmed this screenplay in 1997, resulting in *Good Will Hunting*, which became a major hit.
• The story takes place in New Hampshire, although filming was entirely done in Toronto.
• Joyce Maynard, the author of the book, appears in a cameo role as Suzanne's lawyer.
• In the novel "To Die For," on which the film is based, Suzanne states on page 204 that she would like to see the actress who has just become Tom Cruise's wife. Nicole Kidman, who played the role in the film, is Tom Cruise's second wife.
