Ice Age: Continental Drift continues the story of Manny the mammoth, Sid the sloth and Diego the sabre-toothed tiger, who are separated from the rest of their herd when a cataclysm sets the land itself adrift. Stranded on a floating iceberg, the three friends cross the ocean and reach unfamiliar territory, where they meet strange sea creatures and come up against a crew of hostile pirates. Sid is reunited with his sharp-tongued Granny along the way, while the squirrel Scrat's long-running pursuit of his acorn plays a part in setting the upheaval in motion.
The film was released in 2012 and is the fourth entry in the Ice Age series. It was directed by Steve Martino, whose previous feature was Horton Hears a Who! and whose next was The Peanuts Movie, and by Mike Thurmeier, who had directed the short No Time for Nuts and later directed Ice Age: Collision Course. Michael Berg and Jason Fuchs wrote the screenplay. Ray Romano, John Leguizamo and Denis Leary return as the three leads, with Seann William Scott and Josh Peck as Crash and Eddie and Peter Dinklage voicing the pirate captain Gutt.
Made for a budget of about 95 million dollars, the film took roughly 877 million dollars worldwide, a strong return for a family animation release. On IMDb it holds 6.5 out of 10 from around 242,000 votes, and on TMDB 6.4 out of 10 from more than 8,000 votes. A critics' rating of 5.1 out of 10 from 132 reviews places it below both audience scores.
