What's left behind the scenes

  • The film is based on a play written by director Thomas Vinterberg while working in Vienna. His daughter, Ida, and her stories about the drinking habits of Danish youth served as one of the sources of inspiration. It was Ida who insisted that Vinterberg make a film based on the play and that she herself play Martin's daughter (played by Mads Mikkelsen). Tragically, less than a week after filming began, Ida died in a car accident. After this tragedy, the film's script was revised. The film is dedicated to the memory of Ida.
  • Denmark has one of the highest rates of teenage alcohol consumption in the world. According to a WHO report dated early 2020, 15-year-old adolescents in Denmark consume almost twice as much alcohol as their peers in other European countries. Recent attempts to raise the legal drinking age from 16 to 18 have been unsuccessful, partly because adults fondly remember their own youthful drinking experiences.
  • Towards the end of the film, Martin begins to dance while drunk. Mads Mikkelsen himself performed this scene; no stunt doubles were used. The dance scene took two days to film. Because Mikkelsen hadn't danced professionally for almost 30 years, he had to dance for 4-5 hours a day with a friend and a choreographer.
  • According to Mads Mikkelsen, no alcohol was consumed during filming.
  • When Mads Mikkelsen's daughter was a teenager, he once picked her up from a party and also gave a ride to another young man who was completely drunk. Mikkelsen's daughter asked her father to drop the young man off at home first, and he had an entire case of beer with him. A couple of months later, this happened again. It turned out that this young man was Emil Goll, the vocalist of Scarlet Pleasure, whose song "What a life" concludes the film.

  • When Mads Mikkelsen's daughter was still a teenager, he once picked her up from a party and also gave a ride to another drunk guy. Mikkelsen's daughter asked her father to drop the guy off at home first, and he had a whole case of beer with him. A couple of months later, this story repeated itself. It later turned out that this guy was Emil Goll, the vocalist of the band Scarlet Pleasure, whose song "What a Life" concludes the film.
