What's left behind the scenes

  • Several helicopters flying overhead accidentally appeared in the shot, supposedly searching for Venom and Carnage. This was not in the script; in reality, the helicopters were being filmed for Lana Wachowski’s blockbuster “The Matrix Resurrections” (2021), which was being filmed in the same part of San Francisco as “Venom 2.” Instead of waiting for a clear sky, director Andy Serkis decided to incorporate the appearance of the helicopters into the script.
  • Andy Serkis agreed to direct this film only on the condition that he be allowed to shoot almost everything in the UK and do the editing there as well, because he didn't want to leave his family for long. He didn’t know it, but Sony was looking for a British director to shoot specifically in the UK. This turned out to be a very fortunate decision, as a temporary ban was imposed due to COVID restrictions on international travel, but work on the film continued nonetheless.
  • Andy Serkis wanted Carnage's movements to be somewhat bizarre, reflecting his abilities and nature. A group of dancers was brought in to develop the movements, and special motion capture equipment was used.
  • It was once assumed that the main villain, Carnage, would appear in Ruben Fleischer's superhero action film *Venom* (2018), but this idea was later abandoned.
  • Woody Harrelson didn't immediately agree to play Carnage because he didn't know how fans and critics would react. He even suggested that Serkis voice the character, as Andy Serkis is much better known for his voice acting work than his directorial work (his voice, in particular, is featured in Peter Jackson's *The Lord of the Rings* trilogy, in the films of the rebooted *Planet of the Apes* franchise, and in films from the *Star Wars* universe). Harrelson himself initially struggled to find the voice for Carnage, but Serkis insisted that Harrelson himself should voice the character.
  • Filming wrapped in February 2020, just weeks before the coronavirus pandemic brought the global film industry to a standstill. The film's editing and post-production took place during the period of COVID restrictions.
  • Woody Harrelson disliked the wig he wore while playing the character for Fleischer, so his opinion was decisive when choosing the wardrobe for this film, and he specifically insisted on having a more 'realistic' wig made.
  • The animators based Carnage’s movements on those of scorpions, particularly how an insect’s tail moves before it strikes. Sheena Duggal, who was in charge of special effects, spent a lot of time on social media finding out exactly what fans wanted Carnage to look like.
  • When Eddie argues with Venom in his apartment, Tom Hardy first recorded his lines as Venom, and then they were played back to him in his earpiece, after which he spoke as Eddie.
  • Woody Harrelson didn't immediately agree to play Carnage because he wasn't sure how fans and critics would react. He even suggested that Serkis voice the character, as Andy Serkis is known for his voice acting work far more than his directing work (his voice, in particular, can be heard in Peter Jackson's “The Lord of the Rings” trilogy, the rebooted “Planet of the Apes” franchise, and films in the “Star Wars” universe). Harrelson himself initially struggled with Carnage’s voice, but Serkis insisted that Harrelson himself should voice the character.
