What's left behind the scenes
- The plot is based on Eric Michael Kranz's novel "The Reincarnationist Papers" (2009). The author was unable to convince any literary agents to pitch the book to Hollywood, so he offered a commission on the first page of its literary edition to anyone who could interest Hollywood studios in the novel. After a year and a half, he received an email from a director's assistant in Hollywood who had come across the novel in Nepal. Paramount Pictures acquired the rights to adapt it into a film in 2017.
- Evan is asked: "Which of these items belong to you?" The same question is asked to potential reincarnations of the Dalai Lama.
- Between the 12th and 13th minutes, while Mark Wahlberg's character is forging a Japanese sword, an Asian person is shown making a katana in parallel, but their clothing and hairstyle are more Chinese than Japanese.
