Short description
The world is stunned when a group of time travelers arrive from the year 2051 to deliver an urgent message: Thirty years in the future, mankind is losing a global war against a deadly alien species. The only hope for survival is for soldiers and civilians from the present to be transported to the future and join the fight. Among those recruited is high school teacher and family man Dan Forester. Determined to save the world for his young daughter, Dan teams up with a brilliant scientist and his estranged father in a desperate quest to rewrite the fate of the planet.

What's left behind the scenes

  • Paramount Pictures filmed this movie for theatrical release, but due to the pandemic, sold it to Amazon Prime Video for $200 million.
  • According to director Chris McKay, the image of the muscular old man played by J.K. Simmons was based on viral photos of Simmons from Instagram in 2016, posted by his trainer and actor Aaron V. Williamson. The series of gym photos show Simmons with a large gray beard and a tank top, exercising and clearly displaying his musculature. When it came time to find an actor for the role of Chris Pratt’s character’s tough father, McKay immediately remembered these photos.
  • Most of the actors underwent weapons training in a boot camp.
  • According to Chris Pratt, the winter scenes in Russia were filmed on a glacier in Iceland, where nothing had ever been filmed before. A few weeks before filming began, two bodies were found in a crevasse, apparently from around 1940.
  • In the original script, soldiers from the past were secretly given a toxin that would eventually kill the aliens who devoured them. This nuance explained why the soldiers didn't need special training, but the idea was ultimately abandoned.
