What's left behind the scenes
- The film depicts a real event that took place on September 16, 1979, when two German families successfully escaped from East Germany to West Germany in a homemade hot air balloon.
- In reality, crossing the border took only 28 minutes.
- The filmmakers constructed their own border between the GDR and the FRG, including the so-called 'death strip' five meters high and eight hundred meters long.
- Filming was seriously complicated by sub-zero temperatures in the Bavarian mountains. Snow had to be blown off the snow-covered fields with compressed steam, and the leaves on the trees had to be painted green.
