Short description
A murder in Paris’ Louvre Museum and cryptic clues in some of Leonardo da Vinci’s most famous paintings lead to the discovery of a religious mystery. For 2,000 years a secret society closely guards information that — should it come to light — could rock the very foundations of Christianity.

What's left behind the scenes

  • The film is based on Dan Brown's novel "The Da Vinci Code" (2003).
  • Officials at Westminster Abbey refused permission to film inside the building, expressing their disagreement with the facts presented in Dan Brown's work. After some discussion, it was decided that the scene would be filmed in Lincoln Cathedral.
  • The French Ministry of Culture proved more accommodating. As a result, the film crew easily obtained permission to shoot inside the famous Louvre.
  • Russell Crowe was considered for the role of Robert Langdon, but Tom Hanks got it.
  • Julie Delpy and Kate Beckinsale were considered for the role of Sophie Neveu. After they turned it down, Sophie Marceau, Audrey Tautou, Virginie Ledoyen, Judith Godrèche and Linda Hardy were tested. Contrary to all expectations, the role went to the French actress Audrey Tautou.
  • The creator of the series "24", Joel Surnow, suggested that the plot of the book "The Da Vinci Code" would be a good basis for creating a third season of the television series. Joel discussed this with his boss, producer Brian Grazer, after which a conversation took place with the book's author, Dan Brown, regarding the acquisition of rights. However, Dan had no desire to turn his masterpiece into another soap opera.
  • However, Brian still didn't stay out of the project. A few months later, Sony Pictures bought the rights to adapt the book for $6 million and hired Grazer as a producer.
  • Initially, the famous James Horner was to be invited as a composer, as he was well acquainted with Ron Howard, and this duo had several joint projects under their belt. However, Horner preferred to work on the soundtrack for the film "The New World." Then Hans Zimmer joined the project. Interestingly, Hans was offered to work on "The New World" as well, but due to a busy schedule, he couldn't accept the offer.
  • Initially, Ian McKellen's character was supposed to rely on a special stool. We can see it in the trailer. But then it was replaced with crutches, presumably so the actor could move around more quickly in the frame.
  • In Belarus, the film was pulled from release on the third day under the influence of the church.
  • The film was banned in Egypt and neighboring Jordan, with authorities stating that it "defames the names of Christian and Islamic figures and contradicts the truth about Jesus as attested to by the Bible and the Quran."
  • The runtime of the director's cut of the film is 174 minutes.
  • The Discovery Channel released a documentary film, "Discovery: The Secrets of Da Vinci," exposing all the absurdities of the novel's author's theory.
