What's left behind the scenes

  • The film was shot during the 1970 Le Mans race.
  • The idea for the film originated with Steve McQueen, who organized the financial consortium "Solar Production" and raised a budget of $11 million, which was a very large sum for that time.
  • For filming, three "Porsche 917s", four "Ferrari 512Ss", four "Porsche 911s", two "Lola T70s", two "Chevron B16s", one "Ferrari 312P", "Porsche 908", and "Porsche 914", "Chevrolet Corvette", and "Ford GT40" were acquired.
  • Drivers Herbert Linge and Jonathan Williams, piloting a "Porsche 908/2" with three cameras on board, entered the Guinness Book of Records as the fastest cinematographers.
  • Episodes featuring the rivalry between "Porsche" and "Ferrari" were filmed after the races had already taken place. The film crew used several cars for the background and filmed the competitors' struggle in close-up.
  • In the crash scenes with "Ferrari" and "Porsche" cars, re-bodied "Lola T70s", which were much cheaper, were used instead.
