- Francis Ford Coppola financed the film with his own money.
- The idea for the film came to Francis Ford Coppola after finishing work on "Apocalypse Now," and he wrote the first draft of the screenplay in the early 1980s.
- Due to funding problems, production of the film did not begin until 2001, when some material was shot and script readings were held with Paul Newman, Uma Thurman, Robert De Niro, James Gandolfini, Nicolas Cage, Leonardo DiCaprio, Russell Crowe, Edie Falco, and Kevin Spacey. After the September 11, 2001 attacks, the project was again put on hold due to a scene depicting similar attacks, and Coppola did not return to the film until 2019.
