Short description
This simple romantic tragedy begins in 1957. Guy Foucher, a 20-year-old French auto mechanic, has fallen in love with 17-year-old Geneviève Emery, an employee in her widowed mother's chic but financially embattled umbrella shop. On the evening before Guy is to leave for a two-year tour of combat in Algeria, he and Geneviève make love. She becomes pregnant and must choose between waiting for Guy's return or accepting an offer of marriage from a wealthy diamond merchant.

What's left behind the scenes

  • The idea to turn the film into a musical came to director and screenwriter Jacques Demy.
  • Almost immediately, Jacques Demy realized that he needed singer Isabelle Aubret for the role of the main character, and that Michel Legrand should compose the music for the film. The popular artist Aubret passed the audition and happily agreed to star. But soon after, the singer was involved in a car accident and refused to participate in the filming.
  • Catherine Deneuve had an affair with a friend of director Roger Vadim, who suggested testing his lover for the role. When Jacques Demy agreed, Deneuve had to lose 10 kilograms and lighten her hair.
  • "The Umbrellas of Cherbourg" changed the lives of the Dorelac sisters. Relatively unknown Catherine Deneuve instantly overshadowed her popular older sister, Françoise Dorléac.
  • Catherine Deneuve was genuinely pregnant during filming.
