What's left behind the scenes

  • The lead actresses, Margot Hemingway and Mariel Hemingway, are the granddaughters of the famous American writer Ernest Hemingway.
  • The film received mixed reactions due to its detailed depiction of a rape scene. Rape had been shown on screen before – a notable example being the incident with Hope Lange’s character (1931-2003) in Michael Winner’s (1935-2013) action film “Death Wish” (1974) – but it was rarely shown in such detail and for such a duration. Director Lamont Johnson (1922-2010) wanted the audience to feel as if it was happening to them, not on the screen.
  • Filming in this movie was supposed to launch the cinematic career of supermodel Margot Hemingway (1954-1996), but the opposite happened, and Hemingway became the object of scathing comments. Over the next seven years, she appeared in only two more films, gained weight, and when her career on the runway also ended, she began to abuse drugs. She was found dead in her apartment (she was only 41 years old), and her death was ruled a suicide. Her younger sister, Mariel Hemingway, always believed that the cause of death was an overdose, and stated that Margot would never have taken her own life.
  • Producer Dino De Laurentiis (1919-2010) saw Margot Hemingway on the cover of Time magazine and became determined to make her a screen star. At that time, Hemingway was one of the most sought-after models in the world, and she became the first model to receive a million-dollar fee.
  • In preparation for her role as a lawyer, actress Anne Bancroft (1931-2005) spent a lot of time talking to production designer Toby Shaffer, who had previously been an assistant district attorney.
