- Jessica Chastain (who played Tammy Faye Bakker) had long dreamed of starring in such a film. Around 2012, she saw the documentary “Eyes of Tammy Faye” (Fenton Bailey and Randy Barbato, 2000), became enthralled with the idea of a similar film, and acquired the rights to produce a biopic about the famous televangelists.
- The film hints at a romantic interest between Tammy Faye Bakker and Roe Messner (played by Sam Jaeger). However, the film does not mention that Bakker and Messner married in 1993 (shortly after divorcing their spouses), or that accusations were also brought against Messner, that he was convicted in court, and that he spent 27 months in federal prison. Messner and Bakker remained a couple during his imprisonment and afterwards, until Bakker’s death in 2007.
