Christian Bale was originally planned to star in the film, but he dropped out of the project and was replaced by Ben Affleck.
Olga Kurylenko, familiar with Terrence Malick's habit of completely cutting characters from his films, made him promise that nothing of the sort would happen to her character.
The script wasn't used during filming. Before the start of each shooting day, Terrence Malick simply handed the actors sheets of paper containing his thoughts and ideas (regarding the scenes to be played) and asked them to portray emotions – without words, only through movements and gestures.
To get a role in the film, Rachel McAdams lied about having an allergy to horsehair.
The film's premiere at the Venice Film Festival was accompanied by catcalls.
