What's left behind the scenes

  • 187 is the code denoting murder in the California Penal Code.
  • The original screenplay was written in 1995 by Scott Yagemann, who himself worked as a substitute teacher in Los Angeles for seven years. He wrote the script after a student he had transferred to his school began threatening Yagemann and his family. Yagemann reported the threats to the authorities, and the student was taken into custody. Approximately a week later, he was called as a witness to court, where the same student was being tried for a knife attack on a teacher committed a year earlier. Yagemann was angered because he had not been told about such details of the student's biography before, and he wrote this screenplay. According to him, 90% of the film's material is based on events that actually happened to him personally and to other teachers.
