Short description
During the 1972 Olympic Games in Munich, eleven Israeli athletes are taken hostage and murdered by a Palestinian terrorist group known as Black September. In retaliation, the Israeli government recruits a group of Mossad agents to track down and execute those responsible for the attack.

What's left behind the scenes

  • The film is based on George Jonas's book "Vengeance: The True Story of an Israeli Counter-Terrorist Team." A television film, "Gideon's Sword," was also made based on this book in 1986.
  • Steven Spielberg's daughter, Sasha Spielberg, played the role of an Israeli girl watching television.
  • Steven Spielberg intended to film this movie with a release date targeted for 2003 or 2004. However, after a window opened in Tom Cruise's shooting schedule, Steven preferred to put this project on hold and work with Tom on 'War of the Worlds'.
  • Initially, the role that went to Geoffrey Rush was to be played by Ben Kingsley. The actor had to leave the project due to a conflict with his personal filming schedule.
  • During filming in Malta, a truck rented by the film crew in Germany mysteriously caught fire. Concerns arose that the incident was the work of terrorists. According to the official version of the local police, the fire occurred due to overheating generators in connection with the incredibly hot summer in Malta.
  • Tony Kushner initially refused to work on the screenplay for the film, as he considered it too laborious.
  • Three screenplay drafts were initially written, but the script by Eric Roth was chosen, which was later revised by Tony Kushner.
  • The protagonists of the comedy "Slightly Pregnant" are discussing and admiring this film.
  • Guri Weinberg plays his own father, an athlete who was killed when Guri was a small child.
  • In the scene with the operation in Rome, the shot body of Waël Zwiter falls face down, but later, when Karl comes for the casings, the body is lying on its back.
  • The film is based on George Jonas’s book “Vengeance: The True Story of an Israeli Counter-Terrorist Team.” A television film, “Gideon’s Sword,” was also made based on the same book in 1986.
  • Steven Spielberg intended to film this picture with a release planned for 2003 or 2004. However, after a window opened in Tom Cruise’s shooting schedule, Steven chose to freeze this project and work with Tom on “War of the Worlds.”
  • The main characters of the comedy “Knocked Up” discuss and admire this film.
