What's left behind the scenes

  • A loose adaptation of the eponymous work by J.H. Ronny.
  • The film features no articulate speech; characters communicate through sounds of a primitive language or gestures.
  • The author of the primitive "languages" was Anthony Burgess. He created a language for each tribe featured in the film, basing them on distorted modern languages: English, French, and Italian.
  • The film presents three biological species of humans, sequentially preceding one another according to evolutionary theory: Pithecanthropus, Neanderthals, and Cro-Magnons.
  • Location shooting took place in Scotland, Canada, and Kenya.
  • The film marked Ron Perlman’s debut in cinema.
  • In almost all scenes, with rare exceptions, Ray Dawn Chong appeared completely nude, although her face and body were covered in gray clay. At the time of filming, she was of legal age according to European law, but had not yet reached the age of majority (21 years) according to US law.
