Short description
A celebrated author takes a journey with some old friends to have some fun and heal old wounds. Her nephew comes along to wrangle the ladies and finds himself involved with a young literary agent.

What's left behind the scenes

  • The script only outlined the scenes in broad strokes. All the dialogue was improvised by the actors.
  • Passengers on the cruise liner were unaware that a film was being shot right on board, next to them. Signs were placed around the filming locations to restrict access, but they didn't arouse any particular interest or curiosity among the passengers.
  • Despite claims that all the dialogue in the film was the result of improvisation, Steven Soderbergh explained that the film contained key moments that were clearly and precisely written in the script, while other scenes were invented by screenwriter Deborah Eisenberg based on conversations with the actors, but she subsequently rewrote those scenes many times. Overall, Soderbergh estimated that improvisation accounted for 70% of the screen time, while 30% consisted of scripted lines.
  • Steven Soderbergh followed his usual practice and, in addition to directing, also performed the duties of cinematographer (under the pseudonym Peter Andrews) and editor (where he used the pseudonym Mary Ann Bernard).
  • The general idea for the film came to Steven Soderbergh in 2008.
