What's left behind the scenes

  • Richard Montañez claimed to have invented 'Flamin' Hot Cheetos' first, but this claim is disputed. According to the 'Los Angeles Times', the chips were invented by a team of specialists led by Lynn Greenfield at 'Frito-Lay' headquarters in Plano, Texas, to compete with spicy chips popular in the Middle East. Furthermore, Roger Enrico became head of 'Frito-Lay' only in 1991, when the brand had already been developed and launched. According to Enrico's secretary, a phone call between Montañez and Enrico, in which Montañez praised 'Flamin' Hot Popcorn', took place in 1993, two years after 'Flamin' Hot Cheetos' appeared on the market. 'Frito-Lay' has confirmed, however, that Montañez did indeed develop several successful products for the Latin American market.
