The filmmakers found it difficult to shoot a scene in Los Angeles where Chris Pine's and Ben Foster's characters (James and Mike, respectively) simply walk down the street. The filmmakers couldn't obtain permission to film. Eventually, the police arrived at the location, asking what was going on. They turned out to be ardent fans of Foster, and upon learning what it was about, they themselves offered to provide security around the filming location.
During an interview with the head of covert operations, Kiefer Sutherland's character (playing Rusty Jennings) mentions competitors – private military companies like Triple Canopy and Aegis, and then speaks about the callous Erik Prince. He is the founder of Blackwater Worldwide, responsible for the mass killing of civilians as a result of indiscriminate shooting in Nisour Square, Baghdad, on September 16, 2007.
