The film is based on the true story of engineer Giorgio Rosa and the Island Republic of Roses.
The match during which Giorgio Rosa smashed his own television was most likely the game between the USSR and Italy shortly before the 1964 European Nations' Cup draw. The USSR team won that game 3-1. Or it could have been the 1966 World Cup qualifying match, in which the USSR team again won 1-0.
