What's left behind the scenes

  • The film is based on the autobiography of Frank Abagnale Jr., co-written with Stan Redding, "Catch Me If You Can" (1980).
  • Some scenes were specifically reshot, re-edited, or changed at the request of the real Frank Abagnale Jr.
  • Initially, Spielberg wanted Johnny Depp to play Frank Abagnale Jr.
  • In the film, Frank Abagnale Jr. is depicted as an only child. In reality, he was one of 4 children.
  • The film features an Aston Martin DB5. It is Spielberg's personal car.
  • Before Spielberg, the film was offered to Gore Verbinski, James Gandolfini (who, however, preferred to return to work on “The Sopranos”), David Fincher, Cameron Crowe, and Lasse Hallström.
  • The character of Carl Hanratty (played by Tom Hanks) is based on FBI agent Joe Shea. In the script, the character was referred to as Joe Shea, but was changed to Carl Hanratty for unknown reasons.
  • When the character Carl Hanratty first meets Frank Abagnale Jr., the latter introduces himself as Barry Allen. Barry Allen is a DC Comics character, known as The Flash – the fastest man on Earth.
  • Frank Abagnale Jr. himself played an episodic role in the film as one of the French police officers who caught him.
  • In the scene where banknotes are shown in close-up, it can be noticed that they are from 1996, although the plot takes place in 1967.
  • Several times, the faces of the characters talking on the phone are shown in close-up. It is noticeable that the handset is connected to the wire with a modern RJ-11 (registered jack) connector.
  • In the scene where Frank is in the uniform tailoring workshop, two yellow stripes are sewn onto the cuffs of his sleeves, but in the next scene, when he is walking down the street, there are already three stripes on his sleeves.
  • The film is based on the autobiography of Frank Abagnale Jr., written in collaboration with Stan Redding, titled "Catch Me If You Can" (1980).
  • When the character Carl Hanratty first meets Frank Abagnale, the latter introduces himself as Barry Allen. Barry Allen is a DC Comics character known as The Flash – the fastest man on Earth.
