Short description
Sally and Gillian Owens, born into a magical family, have mostly avoided witchcraft themselves. But when Gillian's vicious boyfriend, Jimmy Angelov, dies unexpectedly, the Owens sisters give themselves a crash course in hard magic. With policeman Gary Hallet growing suspicious, the girls struggle to resurrect Angelov -- and unwittingly inject his corpse with an evil spirit that threatens to end their family line.

What's left behind the scenes

  • The film is based on Alice Hoffman's book "Practical Magic" ("Simple Wonders") (1995).
  • An entire Owens house was built for the filming: a huge set, completely artificial (even the flowers on the lawns were made of silk). After filming, the set was dismantled.
  • When asked why actresses so strikingly different in appearance were chosen for the roles of the two sisters, director Griffin Dunne replied that he had conducted special research into the history of witches and found that witch sisters never looked alike.
  • Sandra Bullock claims that during the filming of the domestic sabbath scene, all four actresses actually got drunk (drinking tequila brought by Kidman).
  • According to the beliefs of many peoples, death can take the form of a large black dog. Therefore, one can notice that a large black dog follows Michael, the husband of Sandra Bullock's character, closely on the day of his death.
  • The film is based on Alice Hoffman's book "Practical Magic" (also known as "Simple Wonders") (1995).
