Short description
David, a robotic boy—the first of his kind programmed to love—is adopted as a test case by a Cybertronics employee and his wife. Though he gradually becomes their child, a series of unexpected circumstances make this life impossible for David.

What's left behind the scenes

  • The film is based on Brian Aldiss's short story "Supertoys Last All Summer Long" (1969).
  • The film was conceived by Stanley Kubrick back in 1969. For thirty years, Kubrick nurtured this idea, but passed away at the beginning of the film's creation. However, his friend Steven Spielberg, in memory of the great director, brought his intentions to life.
  • The author of the story, Brian Aldiss, was initially involved in writing the screenplay, but then Kubrick turned to Arthur C. Clarke for help, though this creative collaboration also proved unsuccessful.
  • The film features a dialogue between David and Teddy: — Are Mom and Dad real? — Don't ask stupid questions. Nobody knows what 'real' is. This is a direct quote from the story on which the film is based.
  • Rolling Stone magazine called Steven Spielberg's film "a genuine work by a true filmmaker."
  • Julianne Moore and Gwyneth Paltrow were considered for the role of Monica.
  • When Martin persuades David to cut a lock of hair, the top button of David's pajamas is alternately unbuttoned, buttoned, and then unbuttoned again.
  • At the beginning of the film, before injecting the robotic woman’s arm, Professor Hobby throws his glasses onto the table. After the injection, the glasses are flipped over.
  • When David awakens after 2000 years, there are visible stains from melted ice packs on his trousers. By the time he approaches the fairy, his trousers are already dry.
