The film was shot on a real ice road, often during snowstorms and at a temperature of -40°C.
Jonathan Hensley wanted the audience to see only live backgrounds, so he refused to use chroma key and composite shots. However, this created a problem – where to place the camera so that the driver, passengers, and background were all visible in the frame. As a result, bodies of new Kenworth trucks were installed on Ford F-550 pickup trucks. Stunt drivers sat at the bottom, and actors at the top. Meanwhile, a real landscape passed by the windows.
The film was shot in the Canadian province of Manitoba.
Kenworth W990 trucks are used for most of the film, but in some scenes, an older and cheaper Kenworth T680 model can be seen in their place.
