Short description
After discovering he's not really black like the rest of his family, likable dimwit Navin Johnson sets off on a hilarious misadventure that takes him from rags to riches and back again. The slaphappy jerk strikes it rich, but life in the fast lane isn't all it's cracked up to be and, in the end, all that really matters to Johnson is his true love.

What's left behind the scenes

  • One of Stanley Kubrick's (1928-1999) favorite films. Kubrick frequently quoted lines from it while working on his own films. He even once invited the lead actor, Steve Martin, to a game of chess.
  • As Steve Martin later wrote in his memoirs, his favorite moment in the film is when his character and Bernadette Peters' character sing "Born Standing Up." The actor found it very touching and eagerly awaited the opportunity to see the audience's reaction to it during the premiere. To his greatest disappointment, this was precisely the moment many viewers chose to go to the lobby and buy more popcorn.
  • At the very beginning of filming, Steve Martin accidentally dropped gloves on the dog's face, and their relationship never recovered from that moment.
