What's left behind the scenes

  • The film used the Delena cancerides spider species from New Zealand. Despite their menacing appearance, they are not dangerous to humans.
  • John Goodman's character, the insect killer Delbert McClintock, crushes a spider, and a disgusting squishing sound is heard. The film's sound designers achieved this effect by crushing a couple of potato chips. They also sometimes used mustard packets for the same purpose.
  • During the scene where the spiders begin to attack the house, the film "Family Ties" (1982) is playing on television.
  • Kanaima (the name of the town in the film) is the name of a vengeance spirit in the mythology of the Guyanese indigenous people. It is also the name of a location in Venezuela near Angel Falls – the filming location for the movie.
  • The film was shot in Cambria, California, as well as in Venezuela.
  • The new species of butterfly that scientists discover at the beginning of the film – the Madagascan Urania – is a real, existing species.
