The film used the Delena cancerides spider species from New Zealand. Despite their menacing appearance, they are not dangerous to humans.
John Goodman's character, the insect killer Delbert McClintock, crushes a spider, and a disgusting squishing sound is heard. The film's sound designers achieved this effect by crushing a couple of potato chips. They also sometimes used mustard packets for the same purpose.
During the scene where the spiders begin to attack the house, the film "Family Ties" (1982) is playing on television.
Kanaima (the name of the town in the film) is the name of a vengeance spirit in the mythology of the Guyanese indigenous people. It is also the name of a location in Venezuela near Angel Falls – the filming location for the movie.
The film was shot in Cambria, California, as well as in Venezuela.
