Short description
Deadbeat dad kidnaps his kids from the bus to an abusive foster home and they go on a run. The cops are after them, they bicker constantly and his idea of a way out is grim, yet this dangerous ride might just turn them into a family.

What's left behind the scenes

  • Sabrine Lloyd, who played the teenage girl, was 23 years old at the time of filming.
  • Using a section of road closed for filming, the rock band R.E.M. recorded a music video there for their famous song "Everybody Hurts."
  • The original title of the film – “Father Hood” (Father nicknamed “Hood”) – is a direct allusion to the noble outlaw Robin Hood. Due to the difficulty of a literal translation, the film received various titles in different countries: “Child Kidnapper” (“Der Kidnapper”) in Germany, “Public Enemy No. 1… my father” (“El enemigo público número 1... mi padre”) in Spain, “Family on the Run” (“Famiglia in fuga”) in Italy, and so on.
  • The character played by Patrick Swayze (1952-2009) was based on the real Mike Hardy, who worked as a technical consultant on the film.
  • The kidnapping scene was recreated in meticulous detail, with the exception that in reality, it involved two girls (Mike Hardy’s daughters), while the film depicts a boy and a girl.
  • By the time this film was being shot, Patrick Swayze’s addiction to alcohol was out of control. It got to the point where he would pass out right on the set in front of the cameras.
