• While working on the image of Kurt, Eugene Kotlyarenko (director, screenwriter and producer) and the actor playing him, Joe Keery, reviewed video blogs that hadn't gained a significant number of views or subscribers.
• Kurt, played by Joe Keery, is based on Elliot Rodger (a student who instigated a rampage in California on May 23, 2014, shooting and killing 6 people and wounding 14 others).
• In one scene, Kurt states that he has already killed 7 people. He killed six of them in a taxi that night. The seventh victim was his mother, whom he killed earlier in the film, a fact that will be revealed later.
