• The film is based on George Crile's novel "Charlie Wilson's War" (Charlie Wilson's War: The Extraordinary Story of the Largest Covert Operation in History, 2003).
• Filming took place from October 12, 2006, in Morocco and Los Angeles.
• Universal Pictures International (UPI) Russia withdrew the film from distribution "due to the film's certain direction," which portrayed the Soviet Union in a negative light.
• A visual effects assistant received serious burns in a scene where a Stinger missile is fired at a helicopter. The flash went in the wrong direction.
