Initially, the film was banned by censorship in Ireland. However, the filmmakers appealed this decision, and in 1981 the film was released.
David Bennent (who played Oskar Matzerath) grew very slowly. In this film, he starred at the age of 11 and was 1 meter 14 centimeters tall. He continued to grow until he reached a height of 1 meter 55 centimeters. Growth continued even after he was over 30 years old.
For the long version of the film, restored in 2010, it was necessary to re-contact the actors to re-record their lines in some scenes, the sound design of which had been lost.
