Short description
The neighbors of a frontier family turn on them when it is suspected that their beloved adopted daughter was stolen from the Kiowa tribe.

What's left behind the scenes

  • Before filming began, the lead actor Burt Lancaster and director John Huston took actress Lillian Gish to the desert to teach her how to shoot. Both considered themselves quite good shooters and were amazed to learn that Gish shot better than them. As it turned out, the actress was taught to shoot by Al J. Jennings, who was released from prison after a long sentence for train robbery, and then became a star of silent films. Jennings met the actress on the set of one of the films.
  • Audrey Hepburn was injured when she was thrown from a horse. The actress was pregnant at the time and spent 6 weeks in hospital, after which she still returned to the set. Due to the need to wear a corset after the injury, the actress's entire wardrobe had to be altered. She lost the baby, which director John Huston never forgave himself for.
