What's left behind the scenes

  • The original title of the film translates to "Shadow in the Clouds".
  • The animated segment at the beginning of the film is based on "Private Snafu" – a series of black-and-white American satirical training short films for soldiers, which were released in 1943-1945. The main character's name is an acronym from military slang SNAFU (Situation Normal: All Fucked Up), which translates to "Situation normal: everything is screwed up." The purpose of the films was to instruct the military on safety measures, sanitary habits, etc., and also to improve troop morale. The cartoons were not intended for a civilian audience, so censorship restrictions did not apply to them.
  • Max Landis's original screenplay was significantly reworked by director Rosanna Liang as a result of accusations of sexual harassment against Landis at the time. According to Liang and actress Chloë Grace Moretz, Landis took no part in the work on the film, and the script was rewritten several times before filming began. Landis watched the film and stated that the script remained 90-95% his.
  • During World War II, there was a women's pilot service in the US Air Force. By the end of the war, it numbered 1074 people; it was an organization of civilian women pilots who flew military aircraft of all types.
  • In preparation for the role, Chloë Grace Moretz visited the maternity ward of a military hospital and spoke with new mothers.
