One of the few films about talking animals where the animals' muzzles don't move in sync with their words.
The film contains two references to Arnold Schwarzenegger. In one instance, the dog Chance calls a cougar "Arnold Schwartzenkitty" (from the English "kitty" – kitten), and in another says "Hasta la vista." This phrase was uttered by Schwarzenegger's character in the science fiction action film *Terminator 2: Judgment Day* (James Cameron, 1991).
The film is dedicated to the memory of producer Franklin R. Levy (1948-1992), who died during filming.
The film is a remake of Fletcher Markle's *The Incredible Journey* (1963), which in turn was based on a novel by Sheila Burnford. The authors of the remake decided to change the names and breeds of the main characters. Young and cheerful American Bulldog Chance was a Labrador Retriever named Quick in the book. Old Golden Retriever Shadow was a Bull Terrier named Dodger. Himalayan cat Sassy was a Siamese cat named Tao.
