Short description
Mitch Wayne is a geologist working for the Hadleys, an oil-rich Texas family. While the patriarch, Jasper, works hard to establish the family business, his irresponsible son, Kyle, is an alcoholic playboy, and his daughter, Marylee, is the town tramp. Mitch harbors a secret love for Kyle's unsatisfied wife, Lucy -- a fact that leaves him exposed when the jealous Marylee accuses him of murder.

What's left behind the scenes

  • Director Douglas Sirk (1897-1987) wanted Kyle to experience homosexual attraction to Mitch and to be secretly in love with him. He could not give a direct indication of this in the film due to the Motion Picture Production Code, also known as the Hays Code – an ethical code for film production that was in effect from 1930 to 1968. Nevertheless, the hints about this circumstance were quite transparent, and viewers in 1956 could interpret them as they saw fit. The modern audience has no doubts about it.
