Short description
As storm season intensifies, the paths of former storm chaser Kate Cooper, lured back to the open plains after a devastating encounter years prior, and reckless social-media superstar Tyler Owens collide when terrifying phenomena never seen before are unleashed. The pair and their competing teams find themselves squarely in the paths of multiple storm systems converging over central Oklahoma in the fight of their lives.

What's left behind the scenes

  • In memory of the original film 'Twister' (Jan de Bont, 1996), the film was shot in Oklahoma on 35mm 'Kodak' film.
  • Approximately midway through filming, director Lee Isaac Chung became incapacitated due to exhaustion, and during his absence, cinematographer Daniel Mindel took over the directing duties.
  • Glen Powell’s parents (he played Tyler) briefly appeared on screen – in a rodeo scene, they are sitting directly behind him and Daisy Edgar-Jones (who played Kate). According to the actor, his parents can be spotted in episodes in all films he has appeared in since Robert Rodriguez’s fantasy action film “Spy Kids 3-D: Game Over” (2003).
  • For many years, Bill Paxton (who himself played Bill Harding in the film) tried to get the sequel to Jan de Bont’s adventure action film “Twister” (1996) off the ground. After the success of the crime thriller “Frailty” (2001), which Paxton directed and starred in, Paxton wanted to make a film about the so-called Tri-State Tornado (March 18, 1925) – 695 people died in this tornado outbreak. Paxton and producer James Cameron also wanted the film to receive an “R” rating. They intended to show viewers a realistic depiction of the damage actually caused by tornadoes, and present it all in 3-D format. At one point, the film was planned for release in the summer of 2012 under the title “Twister 3D,” but the project was eventually canceled due to financial problems, and Paxton died in 2017.
  • Darryl Cox (who played the trailer salesman) is an actor from Oklahoma; in Jan de Bont’s 1996 film, he played a mechanic at a gas station that was hit by a tornado at night. A significant portion of the scenes with his participation were cut during editing, but he is still recognizable in some shots.
  • After filming, Glen Powell kept the grille from the “Dodge Ram” driven by his character and made it into a table. He also wanted to keep his character’s belt buckle, but he had to return it.
  • After all the delays and interruptions in filming caused by the coronavirus pandemic, filming had to be halted in July 2023 due to the Writers Guild of America strike, and resumed only in December. As a result, filming was still underway in February 2024, just months before the film’s premiere, and post-production was running around the clock as the release date approached within two weeks.
  • The scenes in New York were actually filmed in downtown Oklahoma City, decorated to resemble Manhattan.
  • Initially, the film was supposed to be shot in Los Angeles and its surroundings, but director Lee Isaac Chung (who himself grew up in the Midwest) decided it should be filmed on location in Oklahoma. A similar situation occurred during the filming of the first film in the franchise in 1996 – Jan de Bont insisted on filming in Oklahoma and threatened to leave the project otherwise.
  • Tyler's story about his first encounter with a tornado is actually a retelling of an incident that happened in the childhood of the actor playing him, Glenn Powell.
  • The film's producers turned to the National Weather Service for help in training the film's creative team on how to behave during a tornado. In response, the National Weather Service organized a kind of introductory course for the film's actors – Daisy Edgar-Jones (who played Kate), Glenn Powell (who played Tyler), Brandon Perea (who played Boone), Anthony Ramos (who played Javi) – and director Lee Isaac Chung. They studied the meteorology of adverse weather conditions and the impact of tornadoes on everyday life in Oklahoma.
  • Helen Hunt (who played Dr. Jo Harding in Jan de Bont’s film) actively promoted the idea of a sequel and offered to direct it. Instead, she was offered a cameo role, which she declined.
  • Originally slated for release in 2022, the film was to be directed by Joseph Kosinski, but the project faced delays, and Kosinski departed. Discussions about directing the film also took place with Dan Trachtenberg, Travis Knight, and the directing duo Jimmy Chin and Elizabeth Chai Vasarhelyi.
  • Jodie Comer was considered for the lead role, but she was unavailable due to other commitments.
  • The oil refinery that explodes belongs to Benthic Petroleum, as indicated by the sign struck by Javi before the explosion. This is a fictional company that owned the deep-sea research station in James Cameron's 1989 sci-fi thriller 'The Abyss,' and its name can also be seen on a tanker truck in the first film of the 'Twister' franchise.
  • The movie theater scene was inspired by a photograph taken in Mayfield, Kentucky, after a tornado struck in December 2021. The photograph was taken from inside the theater, and the destruction in the town was filmed through the shattered wall where the screen once hung.
  • An alternative ending was filmed in which Tyler, played by Glenn Powell, kisses Kate (played by Daisy Edgar-Jones) at the airport, but it was ultimately decided not to use it during final editing. Director Lee Isaac Chung, executive producer Steven Spielberg, and the cast agreed that the film is about the protagonist regaining her interest in studying tornadoes, and that her relationship with Tyler is based on a mutual fascination with the phenomenon, rather than with each other.
