What's left behind the scenes

  • The father and son, played by Giovanni Ribisi and Aidan Mincks, are introduced as Donnie and Robert. Mark Wahlberg's brothers are named Donnie and Robert.
  • Seth MacFarlane's first non-animated film.
  • The film's release date was originally scheduled for July 13, 2012, but was moved to June 29 – the presumed release date of "G.I. Joe: Retaliation" (2013), which was later changed to March 29, 2013, due to a decision to reshoot the film.
  • The film was delivered to theaters under the title Thunder Buddies.
  • For Tara Strong, who voiced Ted's "I love you," this is her first live-action film since her work on "The Great Journey" (1995).
  • Originally, "Ted" was conceived as an animated series.
  • In the scene where young John makes a wish for his bear to come to life, the starry sky shown was recreated to match how it appeared on Christmas Eve in 1985 in the Boston suburbs. To achieve this accuracy, director Seth MacFarlane contacted astrophysicist Neil deGrasse Tyson, who recreated the star alignment for him.
  • The scene listing women's names was filmed in a couple of takes without the use of cue cards. Mark Wahlberg compiled the list of names himself.
  • The league standings for the AL East teams displayed on the Green Monster wall at Fenway Park indicate that the scene was filmed on May 23, 2011.
  • At the end of the film, the narrator mentions that Sam J. Jones moved in with Brandon Routh. Both actors played characters adapted from comics in films: Jones in "Flash Gordon" (1980), and Routh in "Superman Returns" (2006). There were plans for sequels to both films, but they were abandoned due to disappointing box office returns, despite warm reception from fans and critics.
  • In one scene, Ted mentions the date 9/11. Mark Wahlberg and Seth MacFarlane were nearly on the planes that crashed into the World Trade Center. Wahlberg had a ticket booked on American Airlines Flight 11, but he changed his mind and decided to travel to New York by train, and fly to California later. MacFarlane was supposed to be on the same flight, but was 10 minutes late. He was at the airport when he saw the plane he was supposed to be on crash into the North Tower of the World Trade Center.
  • The archival footage of Ted on "The Tonight Show Starring Johnny Carson" (1962–1992) originally aired on February 29, 1984. The actual guest on Johnny's show that night was Emmanuel Lewis. This can be inferred when Johnny says upon Ted's arrival, "I thought you'd be taller." Ted replies, "That's funny, because I thought you'd be funny." In reality, Emmanuel responded: "Me too."
  • The ringtone on John’s phone when Ted calls is the main theme from the series "Knight Rider" (1982).
  • The scene of John and Lori’s first meeting in John’s flashback mirrors a scene from the film "Airplane!" (1980).
  • The man who climbs onto the stage during a Norah Jones concert is, in real life, Shawn Thornton, who was a player for the Boston Bruins hockey club as of 2012. Thornton is known for his aggression and hooligan behavior, and he leads the team in fights.
  • After a Jetta crashes into a Volvo, its hood is dented. However, when the Jetta stops in front of the kidnappers' house, the hood is fine, only the license plate is dangling, and there is some dirt on the radiator grille.
  • When Laurie and John are lying in bed (before the thunder), John's right hand is initially behind his head, but in the next shot, it is already on his chest.
  • The film begins with events from 1985. It shows a boy opening a Nintendo console set he received for Christmas. Such a set was not released until 1988.
  • When John is driving in the car with Laurie and answering Ted's call, he holds the iPhone upside down (as evidenced by the lock button and headphone jack) for almost the entire conversation.
  • When John is sitting on the couch and Laurie hugs him from behind, he ties his tie twice in consecutive frames.
  • When Ted runs away from Donnie's house, Donnie dances in front of the television while sipping soda. The camera then shows Ted running out the door, then back to Donnie, and he is dancing again, but the glass of soda is no longer visible.
  • During dinner at the restaurant celebrating John and Laurie’s anniversary, the champagne level in his glass fluctuates, increasing and decreasing, but no one is seen topping it up or drinking from it.
  • When John is sitting in his hotel room, Ted walks up to the sliding doors while it is raining outside. Shortly after, they go to the Norah Jones concert at Hatch Shell, and it is clearly visible that it is not raining and has not been.
  • When Laurie is driving and talking to John, the passenger window is seen to be up (reflections are visible). When he opens the car door (a shot from the opposite angle), the window is down.
  • When Sam Jones pours shots for the guys, John's glass is full, but when they start to drink, it's almost empty.
  • When Ted is getting photographed with three girls in the park, the phone taking the picture isn't even turned on.
  • At Rex's party, John and Rex walk past a painting with Tom Skerritt twice in a few shots.
  • When Nora Jones is playing guitar on stage, a capo is visible on the second fret, but when the song ends, it's gone.
  • When we first see Laurie's apartment at the beginning of the film, a reflection of the film crew is visible in the window on the first floor from across the street.
  • The supermarket where Ted works is supposed to be in Boston, but the bags at the checkout are from the Best Yet Market store, which is only located in New York. Also, the name on the cashiers' name tags is not the store's name.
  • Tammy Lynn's name is written differently: Tammy Lynn on her name tag, and Tami Lynn in the credits.
  • When Norah Jones performs, there's a moment when backlight shines through her vocal microphone. Typically, microphones of this type have composite parts that don't give it a transparent appearance. It's quite possible that it's not a real microphone.
  • When Ted and John are sitting in the park trying to smoke marijuana, the bench is very close to the tree trunk. After Donnie and his son approach them, they are shown again, and this time the bench has moved a few feet to the left.
  • When Ted is ripped in half, his voice box ('I love you') is not visible. From the scene after the Flash Gordon party, we know that it is definitely in the center of his chest.
  • Seth MacFarlane's first non-animated film.
  • In the scene where young John makes a wish for his teddy bear to come to life, the starry sky was shown as it appeared on Christmas Eve in 1985 in a Boston suburb. To achieve such accuracy, director Seth MacFarlane contacted astrophysicist Neil deGrasse Tyson, who recreated the star arrangement for him.
  • Initially, "The Third Wheel" was conceived as an animated series.
