What's left behind the scenes

  • A film adaptation of the novel of the same name by the Marquis de Sade.
  • Filming took place in Barcelona, and some scenes were shot in the historical interiors of 19th-century buildings by Antoni Gaudí.
  • The role of the Marquis de Sade was originally intended for Orson Welles, but at the last moment he was replaced by Klaus Kinski. The role of Justine Franco was planned to be given to Rosemary Dexter (who played Claudine), but under pressure from the producers, the role went to 17-year-old Romina Power, which greatly irritated Franco.
  • Jack Palance, who played the role of Brother Antonin, constantly appeared intoxicated on set, although, as Franco admitted, he would not have handled the role so brilliantly in any other state.
