The film was shot in late spring and summer 2008 with a planned release date in the first half of 2009. However, after the breakup in the fall of 2008 between Paramount Pictures and DreamWorks, it was shelved for two and a half years. In early 2011, reshoots were undertaken, after which “A Thousand Words” finally received a premiere date in January 2012. However, after Eddie Murphy stepped down as host of the Oscars, the release was postponed again, first to April and then to March 9, 2012.
