Short description
Corporate billionaire Edward Cole and working class mechanic Carter Chambers are worlds apart. At a crossroads in their lives, they share a hospital room and discover they have two things in common: a desire to spend the time they have left doing everything they ever wanted to do and an unrealized need to come to terms with who they are. Together they embark on the road trip of a lifetime, becoming friends along the way and learning to live life to the fullest, with insight and humor.
What's left behind the scenes
- Justin Zakham wrote the script in just two weeks.
- Jack Nicholson shaved his head specifically for the role.
- From the very beginning, both director Rob Reiner and actor Morgan Freeman saw only Jack Nicholson in the role of Edward Cole.
- Jack Nicholson's 'hospital' experience served as the basis for writing some of the film's dialogue and scenes. For example, mirrored sunglasses were not mentioned in the script. Nicholson brought them to the set himself, taking them from the hospital where he was undergoing treatment. Rob Reiner liked the idea of adding such a detail to his film.
- Justin Zackham wrote the role of Carter specifically for Morgan Freeman.
- Copies of the film were delivered to some cinemas under the false title 'Roads to Paradise'.
- The role of the character's son is played by Morgan Freeman's own son, Alfonso Freeman.
- "Kopi Luwak" (also known as "Civet Coffee") is indeed the most expensive coffee in the world. Its price ranges from $120 to $600. Its production is very slow, as coffee beans must pass through the digestive system of Asian palm civets.
- In the film, at 21:45 Freeman puts on glasses, and in the next frame, he is already without them.
