Jake Gyllenhaal learned of the death of his close friend Heath Ledger (1979-2008) during filming. He immediately left the set and returned only two days later to finish the scene. After that, he secluded himself for a longer period to mourn his friend, and only then was he able to return to filming.
Initially, it was intended that Jake Gyllenhaal would play Sam and Tobey Maguire would play Tommy. Director Jim Sheridan, however, decided that Maguire would not be able to convincingly play the negative character, and the actors switched roles.
