What's left behind the scenes
- According to director Brad Anderson, the original script featured a cave, but filming took place near Winnipeg, Canada, where caves are rare. He then added an old tree in the middle of a swamp to the script as a supernatural element. This same tree is shown in bloom in the past, after which it died and became a haven for an evil force. Anderson tries to avoid excessive detailing of the narrative, as he believes that too detailed explanations regarding monsters and disasters diminish the viewer's sense of fear.
