- Director and screenwriter Gary Dobberman stated that his goal in this remake of Stephen King's novel was to make vampires scary again. He wanted to move away from the romanticized and sexually attractive undead that had saturated pop culture over the past quarter-century, thanks to projects such as "Interview with the Vampire," "Twilight," and "The Vampire Diaries."
