What's left behind the scenes

  • Initially, the film's main character was supposed to be significantly younger. Bradley Cooper was invited for the role, but later dropped out of the project and was replaced by Liam Neeson.
  • Despite the film being set in Alaska, all filming took place further south, in the Canadian province of British Columbia.
  • During filming near the small town of Smithers, director Joe Carnahan commissioned four dead wolves from a local 67-year-old hunter-trapper, Dick McDermid. Two were used to create props specifically for the film, while the other two were eaten by the actors and crew. According to the director, this was done to help them better get into character. The hunter's appearance pleased the casting specialists, and he also received a small cameo role in a bar at the very beginning of the film.
  • The film's release provoked strong protests from American animal protection organizations. Extremely dissatisfied and outraged by the film's bloodthirsty depiction of wolves, PETA and Wild Earth Guardians called for a complete boycott of the film.
  • Filming took place from January 10 to March 3, 2011.
