Short description
An epic that details the checkered rise and fall of French Emperor Napoleon Bonaparte and his relentless journey to power through the prism of his addictive, volatile relationship with his wife, Josephine.

What's left behind the scenes

  • According to director and producer Ridley Scott, 11 cameras were used simultaneously during the filming of the battle scenes.
  • According to Ridley Scott, he deliberately tried to make the length of the version of the film intended for theatrical release as close to 2.5 hours as possible. Scott believes that this is exactly the amount of time that the average viewer can watch a film without interruption, after which the seat starts to seem hard and uncomfortable, and the film – drawn out. In any case, Ridley admitted that he plans to make a director’s cut of the film longer.
  • Filming took 61 days. According to Ridley Scott, this is surprisingly little for a film of this scale. He attributes the short filming period to the fact that everything was carefully prepared, and the number of takes was minimized.
  • In several scenes, a Black General Dumas appears on screen, played by Abubakar Salim. During the Napoleonic Wars, there was indeed such a General Thomas-Alexandre Dumas, a native of Haiti, the father of writer Alexandre Dumas. A brilliant tactician, he was known to his contemporaries as the “Black Devil”.
  • The film begins with Napoleon watching the execution of Marie Antoinette, but in reality, he was not personally present at the execution.
